*Line chart
Create and configure line charts in the Polyteia Platform.
Use a line chart to show how values change over time. It's perfect for time-based analyses like registrations per day, revenue per month, or customer numbers per week.
You can:
Set a title and description
Select a time column for the X-axis
Set a value column for the Y-axis
Optionally split the line by a metric
Customize the line style (linear, curved, stepped)
Enhanced tooltips with additional data context
Mark areas to highlight important time periods
The line chart is ideal for showing changes and trends over time. Each point on the line represents a value at a specific time, and the lines connect the values so you can see how the development progresses.
You can also split your data into multiple lines (e.g., by gender or category) to compare trends.
How to create a line chart
Go to the Chart tab
Select Line chart from the Chart type dropdown menu
Choose a time-based column (e.g., Date, Subscription date) for the X-axis
Choose a numeric column (e.g., Number of customers) for the Y-axis
Optionally add a metric to display separate lines for different categories
X-axis column
Use a column with dates or times - this creates the timeline for your chart.
Examples:
Subscription date
Created at
Month
You can also adjust the label layout (horizontal, rotated, alternating) to better display long date labels.
Y-axis column
Choose a number or calculation that you want to show over time.
Examples:
Number of customers
Average rating
Revenue
The Y-axis determines the height of the points on the line.
Metric (optional)
When you add a metric, the chart draws one line per group in this column.
Example:
If you set Gender as a metric, you'll see one line for "male" and one for "female"
This is excellent for comparing trends across multiple categories.
Line interpolation
Choose how the lines are drawn:
Linear - straight lines between points
Curved - curved lines (softer appearance)
Stepped - stepped lines that change like stairs
Try different styles to see which works best with your data.
Value labels
You can enable Show value labels to display the number at each point on the line. This can be useful for presentations or when comparing exact values.
Enhanced labels
When people hover over points on your line, they'll see detailed information. You can add extra context to make the data more helpful:
In the chart settings, look for Additional Labels
Click Add Label to include extra data columns
Select which column to display (like "District" or "Program Type")
Add a custom label if you want clearer naming
Drag to reorder the information
Example: For a chart tracking disease cases over time, you might add "Population" and "Testing Rate" so people can understand the context behind the numbers.
This is especially useful for time-series data where you want to show related information alongside the main trend.
Mark areas
Highlight important time periods or ranges on your chart with colored background areas:
In the chart settings, find Mark Areas
Add a label for the area (like "Flu Season" or "Emergency Period")
Choose the start value from your data (when the period begins)
Choose the end value from your data (when the period ends)
The area will appear as a colored highlight behind your line
Example: For a chart tracking disease cases over time, you might mark the "Winter Season" area from December to February to show when cases typically spike.
Use cases:
Highlight policy implementation periods
Mark seasonal patterns
Show target achievement periods
Emphasize emergency response timeframes
Tip: Use clear, descriptive labels that help viewers understand why the period is important.
When to use a line chart
Line charts work best when:
You want to see how something changes over time
You want to compare multiple groups over the same time period
You want to analyze patterns, peaks, or trends
If your categories are not time-based, use a bar chart instead.
